myDentaquest
An app to easily manage Medicaid dental benefits
Client
DentaQuest is the largest Medicaid and CHIP dental benefits administrator in the U.S., with programs in 35+ states.
Challenge
DentaQuest wanted to introduce a mobile presence for their Texas market that could then be scaled in other regions throughout the country. The main purpose of building a mobile app was to drive self-service for customers and reduce customer support contacts.
Solution
I worked as the lead designer on the team who develop and launched an app for both iOS and Android, which met all of the client’s key requirements:
Search for dentists/dental offices and view them on a map
Select and change Primary Dentist
View and save member ID Cards (including Apple and Google Wallet)
Account creation, management, and authentication
Access to member resources and support
Scalable to be easily developed for other states
Meet accessibility standards and 508 compliance

Co-creation
As the sole designer on the team, I worked closely with the product strategist, product owners, and subject matter experts to determine and document requirements for the desired app experience. I led the team through workshops to ideate on potential solutions and enable them to have a sense of ownership of the end product.
After aligning on and documenting the proposed user flow, I facilitated Crazy 8’s and Lightning Demo exercises to gather inspiration and explore potential app features with the team. These activities informed the design of the initial wireframes and also cultivated an environment of open collaboration and idea-sharing between myself and the client team.
Iterative and Interactive Design
I began with detailed wireframes to ensure all necessary business rules/requirements and desired features were captured early on. This allowed me to quickly gather feedback and make edits to the designs before we finalized decisions on the branding and design system kit for the app. As designs became more refined, I moderated user testing sessions to get rapid feedback from the target audience. Creating interactive, high-fidelity prototypes enhanced this process, as the users were able to click around in a test experience that closely reflected how the final product would look and function.
Impact and Expansion
We initially launched for the state of Texas in July 2023, after 8 months of design and build work, with refined designs ready for a Florida launch as well. As of today, the app is available for members in Texas, Florida, California, and Virginia, with thousands of downloads and 4.8+ star ratings in both the App Store and Google Play Store.
The mobile app and the impact it delivered to its customer base played a major role in DentaQuest’s merger and acquisition activities with SunLife. Our work on this project and the technologies and methodologies we introduced supported them in growing their team to manage and expand the app to other state markets, as well as in exploring new technology products for future implementation.
